Russell Tinsley (1932-2005) graduated with a communications degree from the University of Texas and was a member of the Air Force ROTC. He and his wife Marjorie were married for over fifty years. Tinsley became a journalist and editor, photographer, and author of eleven books on hunting, fishing and taxidermy.

"He was the first outdoor editor of the Austin American Statesman newspaper, a position he held for over 30 years. He was the host of an outdoor radio show on KLBJ in Austin and was a contributing editor and founder of the Texas Fish & Game magazine."

According to his obituary, Tinsley was on the board of directors of the Outdoor Writers Association of America and received the organization s lifetime achievement honor, the Ham Brown Award, in 2003. He was one of the charter members of the Texas Outdoor Writers Assn., and was awarded the organization s lifetime achievement award, the L.A. Wilke Award.

The collection is organized by accession/addendum.

The main publisher correspondents represented in this collection are: Angler, Archery World, Fawcett Publications, Fishing World, Fur-Fish-Game, Lenniger Literary Agency, National Future Farmer, Outdoor Life, Outdoor Photographers League, Progressive Farmer, Southern Outdoors, and True.

The initial donation of 1967 contains manuscripts and correspondence.

Novel-length manuscripts include Hunting Whitetail Deer (including first and final draft), Shooter's Bible Taxidermy Guide (first draft), and Texas Outdoors (unpublished).

Manuscripts of short stories and articles are first separated by topic: fishing, hunting, outdoor, and miscellaneous stories, and then material is arranged alphabetically by title within each topic.

Incoming correspondence (1956-1959) includes general and publisher correspondence, including letters from August Lenniger.

The 1968 addendum contains manuscripts of books on camping and taxidermy, hunting and fishing stories alphabetically arranged by title, and correspondence with publishers from 1967-1968.

The 1969 addendum contains incoming correspondence that is alphabetically arranged, 1957-1969, including publisher correspondence. Outgoing correspondence contains seven outgoing letters.

The 1970 addendum consists of incoming correspondence that is alphabetically arranged, including letters from the Lenniger Literary Agency and other publishers.

The 1972 addendum contains five letters of outgoing correspondence (1970-1972), and incoming correspondence that is alphabetically arranged, including letters from publishers, 1958-1972. This addendum also includes a chapter outline regarding an off-season hunting and fishing book.

The 1973 addendum consists of five letters of outgoing correspondence (1972), and incoming correspondence that is alphabetically arranged, including letters from publishers and 1 fan letter, 1964-1972. Also included is a book proposal for an off-season hunting and fishing book.

The January 1975 addendum contains twenty-four letters of outgoing correspondence (1973-1974), and incoming correspondence that is alphabetically arranged, including letters from publishers, 1970-1974.

The November 1975 addendum consists of ten letters of outgoing correspondence (1974-1975), and incoming correspondence that is alphabetically arranged, including letters from publishers, 1972-1975.

The 1977 addendum contains seventeen letters of outgoing correspondence (1973-1977), and incoming correspondence that is alphabetically arranged, including letters from publishers, 1974-1977.

The 1979 addendum contains twenty-seven letters of outgoing correspondence (1967-1978), and incoming correspondence that is alphabetically arranged, including letters from publishers, 1955-1978. This addendum also contains one fan letter, five third-party letters, outlines of six books on squirrel, whitetail deer, and dove hunting, predator calling, off-season shooting and hunting, and taxidermy.

Also in the 1979 addendum is agreements, royalties and payment information, and one folder of miscellaneous correspondence.
