Tape-recorded interview conducted by Ann Schwartz and Meta Kaplan on Nov. 5, 1976, with transcript.
His father, Maurice Schwartz was born in Hungary in a little town near Budapest which is a part of Czechoslovakia now. His naturalization papers were dated 1887 and were issued in Oregon Territory. Maurice Schwartz came to America for freedom and because he had a brother in New Jersey. He came to Tacoma in Oregon Territory, went back East and then returned to Seattle in 1887 and stayed here the rest of his life. He started in the burlap bag business. The miners needed containers and everything had to be graded and segregated according to use. As his business grew he had a large personnel whom he trained for their various duties and several used the training which they received from Maurice Schwartz to set up their own businesses.
