Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Ellen Emanuel (1903-1982) was born to Bessie Shafer Emanuel and Meyer Emanuel, both of whom were born in Poland to Jewish parents. She had at least four older siblings: Julius (born circa 1871), Isidore (born circa 1874 and known as Issie--spelled as Izzie in some records), Seal or Saul (born circa 1890), and Eva (born circa 1895). Ellen graduated from the University of Washington in 1924 and married Peter Lonn (circa 1896-1942). Their daughter, Andra Carole Lonn Murphy, was born in 1938 in Hollywood, California. Andra spent her early years in Los Angeles, but the family moved to Seattle in the early 1950s, and she graduated from Queen Anne High School in 1956.

Other relatives represented in this album include Julius Shafer (born in 1871) and Issie Shafer, both brothers of Ellen's mother Bessie. Julius and Issie came to Seattle in the late 1880s and were (in sequence) auctioneers, pawnbrokers, retail clothiers, and owners of Seattle commercial property (as The Shafer Brothers Co.). Other names that appear in the collection are Harry Schneider and Henry Ross.
