Edward P. Jennings was born in Beckett, Massachusetts on 24 August 1873. He graduated from Union College, New York, in 1873. He was a chemistry instructor at Cornell University for six years and began work for P. L. Kimberly in the iron industry in 1879. He was known as one of the best mining experts in the west, serving as consulting engineer of Utah Metals and Tunnel Company.

The Edward P. Jennings papers (1879-1915) consist mainly of correspondence, notes, and notebooks documenting the career of Jennings (1853-1915), a mining engineer in the western states. Mining articles written by Jennings, mementos from an 1889 trip to Europe, and some of his wife's class lecture notes are also included in the collection.
