Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The Waldemar Van Cott Young papers (1850-1852) consist of a volume of poetry, primarily from the Deseret News, and a twenty-one page criticism by Young. Also present is an outline and miscellaneous lines of verse. In his criticism, Young describes early Utah verse as "dominantly religious" and thinks "much of the talent was smothered in the struggle for existence in the new territory." The poetry is divided into three subject areas: religion, moralization, and the California gold rush.
