Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Seattle Free Lances is the oldest professional writers' organization in the state of Washington. Founded in 1921 by professional writers, included newspaper editors, novelists, short story writers, journalists, children's authors, and others. Credited as the group's organizers in those early days are The Seattle Times women's editor Mabel Harding, western writer Frank Richardson Pierce, and P-I city editor Kenneth Gilbert. Over the years, membership included many illustrious names, including Pulitzer Prize winners and NY Times best-sellers. Originally founded as a society of professional writers, Seattle Free Lances membership has grown to include publishing industry professionals and writers who are actively working toward publication. It supports the continued success of published members and encourages the aspirations writers working to become published.
