Historical NoteReturn to Top

Your Family, Friends, and Neighbors, Inc. was started in 1990 by Idaho activists to create a visible gay and lesbian presence in the Treasure Valley. At first, they organized annual Pride events, created Speak Out Idaho, and participated in National Coming Out Day, which aimed to dispel public myths about the LGBT community. When Proposition One was put on the Idaho ballot in 1994, they became political activists. Proposed by the Idaho Citizen's Alliance, the referendum sought to bar the LGBT community from receiving minority status in the state of Idaho. Thanks to YFFN's No On One campaign, the referendum was defeated by a majority vote. YFFN became more involved in the legality of gay and lesbian rights in Idaho and started projects like Idaho for Human Dignity to help protect gay rights.

YFFN evolved into an umbrella organization for many projects including Idaho for Human Dignity, the Anti-Violence Project, Youth Alliance for Diversity (includes the No On One campaign), Women's Night, and Pride. The Pride festival began in 1990 as the First Annual Gay & Lesbian Freedom Day which included a rally at the Capitol steps, a parade, and a festival. YFFN was also passionate about protecting the LGBT community in Idaho. They helped create the Anti-Violence Project (formed in 2004), headed by Teddi Stearns and Javier Smith. The AVP maintained a 24-hour reporting hotline where people could report violence, harassment, and/or discrimination. Speak Out Idaho, an educational outreach project created after Proposition One, trained speakers, developed a newspaper monitoring and letter-writing campaign to provide Idahoans with the facts about the LGBT community, held conferences, and developed educational material.

YFFN's programs worked to uplift and unite the LGBT community, fight for equal rights protections, and spearhead educational campaigns. YFFN dissolved in 2007 because of a lack of sustainable funding. The various projects were headed by prominent Idahoans such as Nicole LeFavour, MaryEvelyn Smith, John C. Hummel, Javier Smith, Brian Bergquist, and Nancy Elizabeth.
