Tape recorded interviews conducted in 1972 by Harry Majors and Karly Winn with Harold Engles, Beathe Bruseth, Edith Bedal, Flora McCulloch Howe and 1974.

Mr. Engles (b. 1902) came to Darrington as district ranger in 1927 and spent most of his career there. He discusses local people who worked with him and their knowledge and exploration of the country around Darrington. He describes the building of trails and lookouts. Mrs. Nels Bruseth, whose husband worked with Engles, describes her arrival from Norway and early days of life in Darrington. Flora McCulloch Howe, daughter of early settlers, describes her summer as a lookout on Higgins during World War I and supplies information about early settlers. Edith Bedal, grand-daughter of Chief Wawatkin of the Sauk Indians and sister of Harry, describes where the Indians lived and how they were induced to move from one location on the Sauk to another and to the Suiattle. Mrs. Harold Engles (Anna May) mentions her family's settlement in the Darrington area.

Scope and Content: Tape recorded interviews conducted on 29 Aug. 1972 by Harry Majors and Karly Winn with Harold Engles, Beathe Bruseth, Edith Bedal, Flora McCulloch Howe.
