Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Professor of Asian language and literature, University of Washington, author.

Professor Shih was born in Foochow, China in 1901. He entered Fukien Christian University in Foochow at the age of twenty, receiving his B.A. there in 1925. In 1930 he was awarded a M.A. in Chinese Philosophy from Yenching University, Peking. During the next six years Shih taught history, literature and philosophy at various universities throught China. In 1936 he came to the United States and enrolled in the University of Southern California from which he obtained his Ph.D. in 1939. He returned to China to teach. After World War II Shih came again to the United States, this time as an Assistant Professor at the University of Washington. He became a member of the Far Eastern and Russian Institute's Chinese History Project in 1947. Shih was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in 1950, and became a full Professor in 1956. After a thirty year employment at the University, Shih retired in 1975.
