Biographical NoteReturn to Top

George Frederick McKay (1899-1970) was a modern composer whose music was influenced by Civil War Era folksongs, old fiddlers’ tunes, northwest Indigenous songs and dances, and the Seattle urban scene’s avant-garde satire. Studying under Selim Palmgren and Christian Sinding at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, McKay became the school’s first graduate in composition in 1923. He became a Professor of Music at the University of Washington in 1927, where he taught for 41 years. His compositions were played numerous orchestras and were broadcasted over the radio in multiple countries, including Australia, Canada, England, France, Spain, and the United States.
