Historical NoteReturn to Top

Begun in about November of 1948, the Seihoku Nippo newspaper (西北日報 ), also called "The Northwest daily", was considered the only daily newspaper at that time printed in Japanese in the Northwest. It was owned by Martin K. Miyata, Gentaro Ohye, and Noboru Date until 1949, when Date left the partnership. One of the Newspaper's owners, Martin Kazue Miyata, had spent several years at the Santa Fe Detention Station in New Mexico, deemed an alien enemy during the Japanese relocation and evacuation in World War II. He was arrested in 1941 in Seattle, where he ran a Japanese weekly newspaper named "Taishu", because during the few years before World War II some pro-Japan articles had appeared in the paper. The newspaper reportedly had as many as 1500 subscribers by 1950, but at this time it was also having financial difficulty. The paper ceased publication in 1952.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The collection contains correspondence belonging to Miyata written during his detention. Once free again, he helped to incorporate the Seihoku Nippo. Two of the chief correspondents in the collected records of the newspaper are the Japanese American Citizens League and the Anti-Discrimination Committee. Seihoku Nippo sought information from these organizations about Japanese evacuation claims and the naturalization bill in order to clarify the issues for its Japanese readers. The collection contains mostly correspondence, financial records, news release, and drafts of articles and advertisements. Besides the Japanese American Citizens League and the Anti-Discrimination Committee, other main correspondents in the collection are Canadian Pacific Airlines and the Union of Pen Friend Clubs of Japan.
