Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Margaret Terrell, an administrative dietetic educator, was born on March 27, 1900, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, to parents Clark and Sarah Crispin Terrell. When she was 14, the Terrell family moved to Eudora, Kansas, where she enrolled in Hesper Academy for one year before transferring to Eudora High School.

One year after her high school graduation, Terrell enrolled at Penn College near her birthplace in Iowa. She graduated with majors in English and Home Economics and minors in Chemistry, French, History, and Education. She then worked as the principal of Van Cleve High School and superintendent of Dunbar Consolidated School before enrolling in graduate school at the University of Chicago, where she earned her Master of Arts in 1927.

In 1928, Terrell began her career at the University of Washington as director of Dining Halls and Residences and instructor in Home Economics. She later was appointed to Associate Professor, and then to Professor of Home Economics, and began an Administrative Dietitian intern program. She remained at the University of Washington until her retirement in 1970.

Terrell was a Quaker throughout her life and was active in Quaker Cove, the Friends Center, University Friends Meeting, and the American Friends Service Committee.

Margaret Terrell died on August 19, 1998.
