- This collection contains correspondence of Joseph G. Reece, the General Superintendent of Oregon Yearly Meeting of Friends Church, from 1945-1951. Handwritten notes and an unpublished report dated 1944 relate to Quaker missions in Bolivia. In addition to Joseph Reece's correspondence, the collection contains transcripts of inspirational radio addresses by Eli Reece, Joseph Reece's father.

“Memo by Charles Beals, Northwest Yearly Meeting Archivist, dated December 1, 1977: “All materials listed ‘Joseph Reece’ Collection were donated to the Yearly Meeting Archives in November 1977. Joseph Reece certified to me orally that every letter in this collection that had no signature or identification as to the writer was of his composition. Therefore, I printed his name at the bottom of each. Signed Charles Beals, Archivist.”

Moving from North Carolina to California in his early years Joseph Reece and his wife, Pearl E. Haworth, also a recorded Friends minister, moved to Portland, Oregon in 1935 to become co-pastors of First Friends Church. This collection contains correspondence, records, and reports that Joseph Reece collected as the General Superintendent of Oregon Yearly Meeting of Friends Church headquartered in Newberg, Oregon (now Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends) from 1945-1951. Handwritten notes and a 1944 report describe a trip that Joseph made to the Friends' mission in Bolivia; the report was never publically delivered. In addition to Joseph Reece's correspondence, the collection contains transcripts of six inspirational addresses by Eli Reece, Joseph Reece's father; the earliest address is handwritten and dated 1891; the rest are dated 1927 and 1928. The papers of Joseph Reece comprise seven folders; one folder of sermons was authored by Eli Reece.

Born in 1893 Joseph Reece, grew up in North Carolina, the son of Quaker minister Eli Reece and Mary Birdsall Reece. Joseph also became a Friends minister after attending Earlham College (Richmond, Indiana), Cleveland Bible Institute (Cleveland, Ohio), and Friends University (Wichita, Kansas). His wife, Pearl E. Haworth, was also recorded as a Friends minister. The couple pastored in Southern California before coming as a pastoral team to First Friends Church in Portland in 1935. Later he pastored the Vancouver, Washington, First Friends Church. Both Joseph and Pearl were among the first residents at Friendsview Manor, Newberg, Oregon, where Joseph was also a member of the Friendsview Manor Quartet. Pearl died in 1979, and Joe passed away in 1985.
