Virginia Cunningham Holmgren was born on June 20, 1909 in Dayton, Ohio. She received her BS in education from Ohio State University in 1931 and MA in language arts from Northwestern in 1941. She married Lloyd E. Holmgren in 1949 in Lima, Peru.

Holmgren lived in Portland, Oregon and published children's books, young adult romances, and natural history magazine articles.

Holmgren died in 2003.
