Roy Martin Winger (1885- ?) was born in Kansas, and educated at Johns Hopkins University. He served as a private, in Company E, at the Student Army Training Corps, in Presidio, California, during World War I.

He became a professor of mathematics at the University of Oregon, and at universities in Washington and Illinois. He also taught in Army overseas schools, including Biarritz American University, and the Command School in Bremen, Germany.

The collection contains personal correspondence organized by date, 1918 - 1960s, and biographical information.

Most of the letters are addressed to his wife and children, and also to his brother, Ralph E. Winger.

One group of letters were sent during 1918, when Winger was a private in Company E, at the Student Army Training Corps, in Presidio, California.

There is also a series of letters written during 1945-1946, when Winger taught in Army overseas schools, specifically at Biarritz American University, and at the Command School in Bremen, Germany. The letters are long and descriptive.

The last folder of correspondence contains letters written during the 1950s and 1960s.

The collection also contains an autobiographical sketch that also includes descriptive information about the correspondence in the collection.
