Historical NoteReturn to Top

When the Alice B. Theatre was founded in 1984, it became Seattle’s first theater ensemble focused solely on work by gay and lesbian playwrights. The company would go on to produce radical and high-camp material, while also employing a mix of styles to make the seasons accessible to all theatergoers. Alice B. Theatre never owned a theater facility but produced full seasons of diverse programming at both the Broadway Performance Hall and at Theatre Off Jackson. The Alice B. Theatre was disbanded in the spring of 1996 and briefly reorganized under the title Alice B. Arts, but the company ceased operations fully in 1997.

The Hidden History project was a nine month collaboration between director Patricia Van Kirk and playwright Drew Emery. Volunteers interviewed over forty Seattle gays and lesbians older than fifty and other volunteers transcribed the tapes. Five of the interviews were used for the hour-long play "Hidden History: True Stories from Seattle's Gay and Lesbian Elders," presented in Seattle, June 10-21, 1992.
