Operated from January 1927 to August 2009 as the Science Reading Room and later the Natural Sciences Library.

Branch libraries, including a Science Library, were operated as departmental libraries in the early days of the University. In 1927, in response to a pressing need for classroom space, many departmental libraries were relocated to the new General Library (later named Suzzallo). Two new staff were added to provide service in the “Science Reading Room”—the predecessor of the Natural Sciences Library which became a branch in 1978. By 1971 there was talk of consolidating the science branches. By the time the library was consolidated into Suzzallo Allen Libraries, it housed 242,000 volumes in addition to other resources. The Library offered space to classes to display coursework and Topic Tables that explored science-related issues.

Scope and Content: This collection contains the records of the Natural Sciences Library Head, Nancy Blase. The records cover the period of Natural Sciences Library's name change from the Science Reading Room in 1978 to just before its closure in 2009. The records include annual reports, library newsletters, photographs, and project documentation.

Biographical/Historical Note: In 1978/1979 the unit's name was changed from the Science Reading Room to Natural Sciences Library and was given the status of a branch library in the Science Division. It moved into the first floor of Allen Library South in 1990. The branch closed in 2009 and was absorbed into the Suzzallo Allen libraries.
