Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Charles "Chuck" Hessey (1908-1990) was born and raised in Yakima, Washington. He began skiing in Washington State as a young boy. In the 1920s, he began visiting the Gold Hill cabin on Morse Creek, owned by Clarence Truitt for access to backcountry ski areas. In the late 1930s, Hessey spent four winters living at the Gold Hill cabin and introducing youngsters to skiing. He met Marion Monter during one of those winters and they later married in 1954. Chuck Hessey began filming his outdoor activities in the 1930s. These included both ski trips in the Gold Hill and Crystal Mountain areas and hiking trips with the Yakima Boy Scout Troop 1 of which he was assistant scout master. During World War II, he served three years in the U.S. Army, stationed in India. He worked in medical supplies in the China-Burma-India theater of war.

Marion A. Monter Hessey (1916-2007) was born and raised in Yakima, Washington where her family owned a chicken hatchery. She graduated from the Yakima Business College, then worked at the Naches Ranger Station during World War II. She worked as bookkeeper and office manager for Gilbert Orchards for more than 40 years. Marion was a member of The Cascadians, an outdoor recreation and conservation club located in Yakima, from the early 1940s and joined The Mountaineers in 1945.

The Gold Hill Cabin was sold in the late 1940s to fifteen people, including Chuck Hessey and Marion Monter, who formed the Gold Hill Outdoor Club. The Hesseys spent weekends and vacations skiing with other club members using the cabin as their home base. Chuck and Marion both became very active members in the club with Marion serving as president for a time.

Chuck and Marion were well-known for exploring unknown areas of the Cascade and Olympic Mountains on skis and backpack trips. They documented many of their trips with film footage of the scenery, wildlife, and their skiing and hiking adventures. Several of the films that Chuck and Marion made were used as publicity to help create the North Cascades National Park, Glacier Peak Wilderness area, and the Crystal Mountain ski resort. Chuck also collaborated with David Brower and the Sierra Club to produce America's Alps , a film in support of the establishment of the North Cascades National Park.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

Films of people skiing, hiking and camping in the Olympic Mountains and Cascade Mountains of Washington State. One notable aspect of the Hessey films is their support of conservation efforts. Many of their films are educational and explicitly urge preservation of wild lands. Also includes three films from Charles Hessey's World War II service in Louisiana and India.

Other Descriptive InformationReturn to Top

Arrangement

The collection has been arranged into multiple series:

  • Hiking, Skiing and Camping Films
  • Wartime Films
  • Climbing Technique films
  • Advocacy and Promotional Films
  • Nature and Wildlife films
  • Title Cards and Outtakes

Many films in this collection are edited with narration, music and titles. Outtakes are scenes from those edited films. Most of the films in the Skiing, Camping, and Hiking Films section contain unedited or lightly edited footage of the Hesseys and their family and friends hiking and skiing in the Pacific Northwest. Three reels of 8mm film document Charles Hessey's experiences during World War II. Several films appear to be footage not used in any other Hessey project and were found in original yellow boxes, with handwritten notes describing the contents. These short camera original reels were spliced together onto larger reels, loosely grouped by content (i.e. wildlife, places and activities).

Custodial History

The films were originally in the custody of The Mountaineers History Committee.

Crystal Mountain and You
Made by Charles ("Chuck") Hessey in 1959 at the request of the Crystal Mountain board of directors. It illustrates skiing at Crystal Mountain before any ski area development had taken place there. When Seattle and Tacoma businessmen-skiers began scouting and investigating Crystal Mountain as a potential ski resort, they met the Hesseys. With Chuck Hessey's unmatched knowledge of the country and his skill as a filmmaker, he was a natural choice to make a film to be shown to government officials and potential investors. It is possible that Hessey created a print of the film with sound, but no such print has been found. However, the Hessey papers contain a script of the film.
