Historical NoteReturn to Top

In 1958, the Laboratory School Administrators Association (LSAA) was founded and sought to oversee the growth and promotion of lab schools across the nation. The first president of LSAA was Avard A. Rigby, of Brigham Young University. In its early years, LSAA faced challenges due to a lack of funding and a small staff. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, discussions were held on how to improve the organization. In 1971, LSAA changed its name to the National Association of Laboratory Schools (NALS). By 1974, new by-laws were in place, the organizational structure was revamped, and the title of NALS was officially adopted. In 2011 the name was again changed to the International Association of Laboratory Schools to reflect its global scope. However, the organization has decided to preserve the name NALS on documents generated under that name. Currently, IALS has 100 laboratory school members, and sponsors an annual national conference.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

This collection is organized into two series, I: IALS/NALS materials, and II: individual lab school materials and publications.

Series I consists of IALS/NALS newsletters, journals, convention programs, directories, and materials related to the IALS/NALS. All materials in this series are organized chronologically.

Series II consists of individual lab school correspondence, information and studies by lab schools, publications related to lab schools, VHS and cassette recordings, and photo albums. Correspondence is organized alphabetically, by the sender, unless otherwise specified. The rest of the materials in series II are organized alphabetically by institution and author. The last boxes contain recordings and photo albums.
