Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Tacoma, Washington civil engineer. John Cecil Black was born in Elkton S. Dakota, Dec. 17, 1882, and died March, 1970. His parents settled first in Fairhaven, Washington, where Black attended school. Black also attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied civil engineering. He eventually moved to Tacoma where he worked as a civil engineer. He left Tacoma in 1929, moving his family to Chicago, Ill. Black married Mary Elizabeth Holbrook in 1914. Writings: Road and Street Construction Methods and Costs. Chicago, Ill., Gillette Pub. Co., 1940. With Halbert Powers Gillette.

Scope and Content: Diaries (4 bound vols, 1 diary in loose sheets), 1910-1929, written while Black was a resident of Tacoma and professionally active as a civil engineer. Diary entries include references to civil engineering projects he was involved in, weather friend and associates, etc. Photographs of Elkton, South Dakota and one of the Southern Pacific Railroad survey party, undated.
