Annette Lesley Buchanan was born September 17, 1945 in England to Paul and Sheila Buchanan. Raised in Seattle, she attended Ingraham High School, where she edited the school newspaper, The Cascade. She received a National Merit Scholarship to the University of Oregon, where she majored in journalism.
In May of 1966, Buchanan was named the Managing Editor of the Oregon Daily Emerald. A few weeks later, Buchanan wrote an article quoting several students' favorable views on the use of marijuana. In June, Buchanan was subpoenaed by the Lane County district attorney, William Frye, to reveal her sources. Before a Grand Jury Buchanan twice refused to reveal her sources and was ordered to stand trial.
At her trial, Buchanan continued to refuse to disclose the names or any other details about her sources or the interviews she conducted. She was eventually held in contempt, and ordered to pay a $300 fine, a verdict Buchanan appealed to the Oregon Supreme Court. Though the Oregon Supreme Court upheld the verdict, in April 1973 the Oregon House passed Senate Bill 206, a bill allowing Oregon journalists to refuse to reveal the identity of confidential sources.
During her trial, Buchanan met Mike Conard, a United Press International (UPI) photographer assigned to cover her story; they married in 1967. From 1975 to 1997, Annette worked as a copy editor at the Oregonian. She and Mike also owned and operated MCC Farms outside of Sandy, Oregon. Mike died of cancer in 1987. Annette passed away February 1, 2013.

This collection contains correspondence, legal documents, publications and articles, miscellany, and newspaper clippings relating to the trial of Annette Buchanan, Managing Editor for the Oregon Daily Emerald, in the late 1960's.
The correspondence in this collection is comprised primarily of letters of support for Buchanan during her trial.
The legal material in this collection includes a summary of the case by Dr. Warren C. Price, professor of Journalism at the University of Oregon; a statement from Lane County District Attorney William Frye; a Circuit Court memorandum, filed by Buchanan's attorney, in opposition to the motion to require Buchanan to answer certain questions; and Section 1 of House Bill 1020, which granted news reporters the privilege of nondisclosure of their sources.
Publications and articles in this collection discuss Annette's trial, and include articles in Newsweek; The Matrix, a magazine for women in journalism; the Argus; the Quill, a magazine for journalists; and the Moderator.
The miscellaneous material in this collection includes three photographs of Ms. Buchanan from the 1960's and 1970's, and a Certificate of Achievement from the Oregon Daily Emerald for Best Overall Effort.
The newsclippings in this collection deal with Ms. Buchanan's trial, and are sourced primarily from Eugene and Oregon.
