Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Professor of Zoology, University of Washington.

Melville Harrison Hatch was born in Michigan in 1898. Even as a young boy he was fascinated by natural history. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1927. Before coming to UW, he taught at the universities of New York, Illinois, Michigan, and Minnesota. He retired from the universtiy after teaching for 40 years in the zoology department. Outside of zoology, beginning in 1944, and continuing for many years, he was chairman of a course in the general studies department. It was called "Critical Problems of our Culture." It was taught without a textbook for the course, but instead consisted of chapters written by participating professors, personal to the point of view of the writer. It represented a unique way of organizing a class that has since been copied elsewhere. In his research he concentrated on beetles, specifically the Celeoptera. Hatch was a member of the American Association of University Professors and Entomological Society of America.
