Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Manfred Koczur was born on September 25, 1946 in Ottlingen, West Germany, to Anton and Adele Koczur. As residents of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire and lands subsequently occupied by Nazi Germany, Manfred’s parents lived through the upheavals of World War I and World War II and experienced displacement before immigrating to the United States in 1956. Anton Koczur worked as a lumber sorter, and Chris Skone, a lumberman who operated the Lost Creek Lumber Company in Kalispell, Montana, sponsored the family’s immigration. The Koczurs settled in Milltown, Montana, and Manfred attended Missoula County High School before enrolling at the University of Montana. While at the university, Manfred was involved in the UM Air Force ROTC, earning several scholarships through the program. He graduated in 1968 with a degree in history and political science and later served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force in Vietnam. He retired after 22 years in the Air Force and died on June 3, 1999 in Montgomery, Alabama.

Manfred Koczur was the custodian of 57 glass plate images of people and places in the Bonner-Milltown, Montana area, created circa 1910. As a student, he donated them to the University of Montana in 1967. The original photographer is unknown.

The Manfred Koczur Collection of Photographs consists of 57 glass plate images of people and places in the Bonner-Milltown area of Montana, created circa 1910. Portraits of Bonner and Milltown citizens and photos of the Anaconda Mining Company lumber mill feature prominently in the collection. There are also a few photos of the Northern Pacific Railroad bridge at Bonner and railroad workers, as well as one photo of the wooden Milltown Dam.

Custodial History

Manfred Koczur held the items in this collection until he donated them to the University of Montana in 1967. Custodial history prior to Manfred Koczur's possession of the items is unknown.

Acquisition Information

The University of Montana accepted Manfred Koczur's donation of the photos on October 16, 1967.

Processing Note

Original descriptions of the photos were transcribed. The University of Montana’s Archives assigned photo numbers to the images in 1976 and placed them into its general photo collection. In 2021, the images were pulled from the general photo collection and described as Mss 941.
