Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Palmer David (P.D.) Skaar was born in Mishawaka, Indiana on March 14, 1923. Skaar received his PhD. from Indiana University in 1952. He performed his post-doctoral research at the University of Wisconsin and served on the staff of the Long Island Biological Station in Cold Spring Harbor, New York. In 1957, Skaar joined the faculty of Montana State College. While at Montana State University, Skaar founded and directed the Genetics Institute. His publications include Montana Bird Distribution (six editions published from 1975-2003), Birds of the Bozeman Latilong (1969), and had many publications in the field of microbial genetics. Skaar coined the word "latilong" and pioneered the "latilong" concept in distributional studies. He died March 30, 1983.
