Historical NoteReturn to Top

Ruth McDonough was 19 years old in 1956 when she heard, through a girlfriend, about a river running outfitter named SOCOTWA. Her and the friend, Jackie McCarty, thought the idea of a river trip sounded adventurous, so they signed up for an 8-day trip through Glen Canyon on the Colorado River. The trip was so enjoyable that they signed up for another one the next year, May 1957, this time a three-day run on the Yampa and Green Rivers in Dinosaur National Monument. This one, unfortunately, was not as enjoyable, as it rained and was cold for most of the trip. After that, Ms. McDonough did not do any more river trips with SOCOTWA. An oral interview with her regarding these trips is available in A0740.
