John L. Casteel was born in Randolph, Nebraska, and educated at Nebraska Wesleyan University and Northwestern University. He married Audeline Boughn in 1929. He taught speech at the University of Oregon, 1931-1942, was ordained to the Congregational ministry in 1942, and taught speech at Union Theological Seminary in New York.

Collection includes diaries, 12 volumes, 1931-1942, describing John L. Casteel's life in Randolph, Nebraska; his car accident, March 27, 1931; his teaching career; his daughter, Margaret, and son, John Alden; and other topics.
