Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Anna Nason was born in Laurin, Montana in 1869. Her parents, Richard and Mary Nason, arrived in Montana in 1864, searching for gold in Alder Gulch. They eventually purchased the John Redfern Stage station and then a farm in Laurin. The family had six children, Teresa, Mary, Anna, Margaret, John, and Alberta (Bertie).
Nason was educated at the Convent of the Sacred Heart boarding school for girls in Ogden, Utah and also briefly attended the public high school in Butte, Montana. She became a schoolteacher and took her first position with the city of Butte in a wood camp called String Town. She worked as a teacher in Butte until the mid-1890s and then took a teaching position in Hamilton, Montana. She stayed in Hamilton several years before moving back home with her parents and teaching in Laurin for a year. Following her short time in Laurin, she returned to Butte to teach until she moved to California to be closer to her sister, Mary.
Anna Nason eventually married and continued to live on the west coast.

This collection consists of a single volume of Anna Nason Appelman's reminiscence about her life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century Montana entitled Montana, I Return to You. She includes stories of growing up outside of Virginia City in Laurin, Montana on the family farm and her time as a schoolteacher in both Butte, Montana and Hamilton, Montana around the turn of the century.
