Historical NoteReturn to Top

William Decatur Kartchner was born in Philadelphia to John C. and Prudence Wilcox Kartchner. He converted to Mormonism in 1843 and moved to Nauvoo, Illinois. There he married Margaret Jane Casteel. They moved to the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. The family started farming and subsequently moved to California, back to Utah, then settled in Arizona where Kartchner became postmaster.

The William Decatur Kartchner autobiography consist of a 51-page photocopy of a narrative/diary written by Kartchner. It contains biographical information on his family, as well as information on his conversion to Mormonism, his marriage, home movements, and illnesses. Most of the account is narrative in style, until 1878 when it changes to diary entries.
