Series 1-3 of this collection was donated to Lewis & Clark College in 2021 by Gary E. Moulton. Series 4 was donated to Lewis and Clark College in 2017, and was previously processed as the Lewis and Clark Expedition Publications, 1897-2014.

Gary E. Moulton is an emeritus professor of American history at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is well-recognized for his editing and publishing of The Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in thirteen volumes. He is the recipient of the J. Franklin Jameson Award of the American Historical Association for the editing of the Lewis and Clark Journals, and the Outstanding Research and Creative Activity Award from the University of Nebraska.
