Accession No. 2876-001: Charles Horowitz oral history interview, 1977Return to Top

.06 cubic foot plus 3 sound cassettes ( 1 hour 50 min.)

Scope and Content: Tape recorded interview conducted by Joseph Cohen and Meta Kaplan in 1977; transcript.

Interview includes a narration of Justice Horowitz's life in New York City and in Seattle as a student in Seattle Public Schools, at the University of Washington and as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University. Included is a discussion of his involvement in Jewish organizations and of his career as a practicing lawyer and as a State Appelate Court and Supreme Court justice. He also discusses the Reform Community's attitude toward Zionism before Israel became a state.

Scope and Content: Speech and covering letter, 1983; biographical sketch, 1987; program from memorial service including obituary, 1989.

The speech acknowledges the role of Frank Hanawalt, principal of Garfield High School, Seattle, in establishing an emergency student aid program funded by the Saul and Dayee Haas Foundation. The biographical sketch is a lengthy article from "Bar Bulletin", Nov 1987.
