Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Harry C. Bauer was born in St. Louis, Mo., on July 22, 1902. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Washington University, and graduated from the St. Louis Library School in 1931. During World War II, he was a combat intelligence officer for the United States Air Force and earned a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Air Medal. Bauer was the assistant library director at the University of Washington from 1945 to 1947 and director of the library from 1947 to 1959. He then served as a professor of library science until 1967. Bauer retired from the Army Reserves as a colonel and was a Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the American Legion and Kiwanis Club.

The collection consists of photographs relating to the life and career of Harry C. Bauer. The main portion of the collection covers his library career, and another series documents his military career. The third series focuses on Bauer with members of the Kiwanis Club.
