Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Seattle real estate agent Hugh Hopkins Russell (1899-1959) moved to Seattle from San Francisco in 1906, when he was 7 years old. He attended Franklin High School, where he and other students formed a dance band that was Russell's source of income for many years. He later attended the University of Washington. While at the university, he also took a job as a trainee in the insurance underwriting department at Burwell and Morford Co. During his junior year, he quit school and began to work full-time at Burwell and Morford as the general manager of the real estate investment department and vice president of the property management division. In 1924, Russell started his own real estate business, which was immediately successful. One of Russell's largest real estate projects was to develop property in the Blue Ridge neighborhood of Seattle on land owned by W. E. Boeing. The Russell family later lived in this neighborhood until Hugh Russell's death at the age of 60.

Hugh Russell was married to Bea Hallgren. Their son, Hugh Hallgren Russell, was born in 1927, and their daughter Joann was born in 1928. Hugh, Jr. and Joann both attended Ballard High School, and Hugh finished school at Broadway High School following World War II. Hugh, Jr. attended Washington State College; Joann attended the University of Washington.
