The Fort Missoula Faculty Housing Organization was a housing project designed to accommodate both the faculty and staff at Montana State University (now the University of Montana) in Missoula, Montana, and to ease the overcrowding of returning veterans and students to the University following the end of the Second World War. Begun in 1947, the housing project lasted until 1957 when the U.S. Army reacquired the Fort Missoula property for military purposes.

The materials in this collection provide insight into the history and inner workings of the Fort Missoula Faculty Housing Organization. Among the faculty and their families who lived in the housing was Professor of Anthropology Carling I. Malouf. At some point, Malouf compiled the documents in this collection, which trace the origination of the organization as well as its financial transactions. He also wrote a history of the Housing Organization. This collection includes correspondence, memos, receipts, agreements, meeting minutes, newsletters and expense sheets. An index to the numbered documents is included. This collection also contains receipts, inventories and similar documents which are not listed in the index.

Malouf’s history and the numbered documents in this collection are arranged chronologically to maintain in their original order. The rest of the materials in this collection have been arranged alphabetically by folder title.
Custodial History
This collection was donated to the Archives by University of Montana professor Carling I. Malouf in 1989.
Processing Note
The bulk of the collection was numbered and indexed prior to its arrival at the Archives. It appears that at one point Malouf’s history and the numbered documents were arranged in a binder. Upon its receipt by the Archives it was designated UM 22, but was later assigned RG 26.
