Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Northwest Center for Occupational Health and Safety was established in 1983 as an office in the UW Department of Environmental Health charged with providing graduate education, continuing education, and outreach programs in occupational health and safety for Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska. The Dept. of Environmental Health became the Dept. of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences on February 1st, 2003; however both the Center and the Department continue to reside within the UW School of Public Health and Community Medicine and have retained their historic missions and goals. The Center is one of fifteen regional Education and Research Centers funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

The Center produces trained professionals specializing in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety, Occupational Health Nursing, Occupational and Environmental Medicine, and other occupational health and safety fields. Academic programs provide continuing education courses and outreach programs in fields to practicing specialists and citizens of the region in conjunction with other educational and research organizations on campus. Continuing education courses have also been offered throughout the Pacific Northwest region and included the participation of other academic institutions and government agencies.
