Scope and Content: Sermons, prayers and other writings of Mrs. Silver's grandfather, S.S. Hyams. Clippings regarding Mr. Silver's business and civic work. Speech and program regarding Mrs. Silver's civic work and 1 tape-recorded interview with Max and Viola Silver with transcipt
In the 1972 interview with Mr. Silver he discussed the establishment of the Menorah Society of the UW (ca. 10 min.). In Mrs. Silver's interview she discusses her family history. Her grandfather, a rabbi in London, had studied anatomy at Harvard, and now served as a lay rabbi in Victoria and occasionally in Seattle (ca. 1885-1890). Her father Moritz Gutmann opened a fur business in Victoria for his cousin, Joseph Ullman. After Mrs. Gutmann's death in 1900, Mr. Gutmann moved his family to Seattle, where he established the Hudson Bay Fur Co. Mrs. Silver discusses her involvement in this business prior to her marriage and her subsequent involvement in civic affairs and social welfare.

Scope and Content: Tape-recorded interview conducted by Joseph Cohen and Jeanette Schreiber, covering 1894-1970s, with transcript.
Interview with Max Silver. Begins with early life in a small town near Lwow (formerly Lemberg in Galician Austria). The family lived briefly in New York City, moved later to Zanesville, and then to Columbus, OH. Upon graduation from high school in Columbus, Max came to Seattle and enrolled at the University of Washington in a pre-law program. WWI interrupted his academic activities. With Eimon Wienir he founded the UW Menorah (Jewish Student) Society. Silver was exceedingly active in Seattle business and civic organizations and occupied positions of leadership in the general community. He was a leading figure in Temple de Hirsch, Zionist organizations' activities, B'nai B'rith and many other organized activities.
