Historical NoteReturn to Top
Elizabeth Anne (Annie) Wells Cannon was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Daniel H. Wells and Ameslan B. Wells in 1859. She graduated from the University of Deseret in 1879 and was married to John Q. Cannon in 1880, with whom she had 12 children. She was an active member of the Relief Society Board of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1902-1910 and 1919-1942. Cannon was an activist for women's suffrage and was a member of the Utah State Legislature from 1913-1915 and again in 1921. She was very active in community affairs and was president of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, first president of the War Mothers of Utah, and a charter member of the Utah Red Cross. Cannon was also chosen by Herbert Hoover to be Utah's chairman for the European Relief Drive, of which she was the only woman member.
