Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Henry and Inga Sjolseth Kolloen were Norwegian Americans who left Seattle in 1898 to seek gold in Alaska during the Yukon Gold Rush.Their papers tell the tales of their separate, but intersecting journeys to Alaska by ship, through the Chilkoot Pass on foot, and up the Yukon River by boat to the city of Dawson. After some unsuccessful gold seeking, they apparently settled down to running the Jo Jo Hotel (alternately the Joe Joe Hotel) located on Gold Run Creek. There they had a daughter named Gertrude. Peter Kolloen and Jakob Sjolseth, the brothers of Henry and Inga, later joined the couple in Dawson at the Jo Jo Hotel.

Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

The Kolloens were part of the 30,000 or so successful Klondikers of the Klondike Gold Rush (1896-1899) that made it to the remote town of Dawson. At its peak in 1898, Dawson was a bona-fide city with many amenities and contributed to the creation of Yukon Territory as a new Canadian province. By the time many of the Klondikers had arrived in Dawson, most of the gold claims had been staked and those who arrived late had to either work for other claim owners or venture into others types of business, which may have been the case for the Kolloens. .

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The photographs document Henry and Inga Kolloen’s daily life while living in the Dawson area, Yukon Territory, possibly at the Jo Jo Hotel on Gold Run Creek, where they may have also worked. The two other main subjects of the collection document gold mining claims on nearby Sulphur Creek, No. 15 below Discovery and No. 18 below Discovery, the former of which is identified as being owned by Tom Mokelbust. It also includes scenes of several Alaskan towns including Fairbanks and Juneau. Notable Klondike photographers based in Dawson took many of the photos, among them were Wolfe and Kinsey & Kinsey. .

All photographs are copies of the original photographs; with the exception of the portrait of Henry Kolloen, which is an original cabinet card portrait.
