Historical NoteReturn to Top

Captain James Blakely (1812-1912) was born in Lynes County, Tennessee, November 26, 1812, and received his education there. In 1846, he started for Oregon and arrived at present day Brownsville on October 9 of that year. With his uncle, Hugh L. Brown, after whom Brownsville later was named, he took up a donation claim and started Brownsville in 1855. Along with his uncle he became a member of one of the leading mercantile establishments of that region.
