Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Danish Brotherhood in America is a fraternal benefit society dedicated to perpetuating Danish cultural traditions by promoting a shared sense of Danish heritage among its members. In addition, the Danish Brotherhood in America provides financial and emotional support to its members in times of need, assists them in securing employment, and offers them low-cost life insurance.

Seattle Lodge 29 of the Danish Brotherhood in America was organized April 8, 1888, when the first officers were installed by Victor Conradsen by the authority of Supreme President L.L. Ries. At the time of its establishment, the lodge had only eleven charter members and was the first Danish Brotherhood in America lodge on the Pacific Coast. Since that time, lodge membership has gradually increased, but the overall mission of the lodge remains the same; namely, to maintain and preserve Danish customs and identity for the benefit of lodge members and their families.

Scope and Content: These records of the Danish Brotherhood in America, Lodge 29, consist of materials dating from 1888 to 1999. These provide insight into lodge meetings and other official functions and activities of Lodge 29, and document the role of the lodge in Seattle's Danish community. Minutes, financial records, and incoming letters series are the most extensive in coverage and contain many Danish language materials. For instance, minutes of meetings before June 26, 1946, were recorded entirely in Danish. Over time, the collection materials transition from Danish to English.

Other series helpful in understanding Lodge 29's functions and activities are organizational features, bylaws, ritual guides, song books, programs, and newsletters. Of particular interest is the program for the 22nd National Convention of the Danish Brotherhood in America, which was held in Seattle, September 15-20, 1947. This provides evidence of the great extent to which Danish immigrants and their descendants had risen in Seattle and Puget Sound businesses at that time.

Restrictions on Access: The collection is open to all users.

Restrictions on Use: Literary rights of representatives of the records-creating organization have been transferred to the University of Washington Libraries.

Acquisition Info: The records were donated by Sam Fredriksen, June 20, 1972; Sten Jessen, undated; and the Danish Brotherhood via Otto Brask, March 10, 2003.
