The Antiarrhythmics Versus Implantable Defibrillators (AVID) trial was created in 1992 to examine the usefulness of implantable cardiac defibrillators. The Clinical Trial Center (CTC), coordinated at the University of Washington Department of Biostatisics in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, was established in 1993 to help the planning committee conduct the study and develop a protocol. The NIH-funded, clinical trial was sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. The AVID CTC project was dissolved in 2002.

Records include correspondence, minutes, reports, committee files, newsletters, mailing lists, surveys, application materials, and related materials documenting the creation and administration of the AVID trial at the University of Washington. The principal investigator for the AVID trial was Alfred Hallstrom, who also served as a professor in the University of Washington's Department of Biostatistics. Hallstrom also served as the principal investigator for the Cardiac Arrhythmia Suppression Trial (CAST) held at the University of Washington between 1986 and 1998. A small number of records from the CAST trial are present in this accession.
