Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Vivian Morgan Carkeek, son of Morgan and Emily Carkeek, was born November 23, 1879. He was a member of the first class (1901) of the University of Washington Law School. He went into legal practice upon receiving his degree and was a partner in the firm of Carkeek, McDonald, Harris and Coryell. He was active in Seattle civic and social affairs, and served as president of the Seattle Historical Society. Carkeek was nominated for president of the UW Alumni Association in 1923. He went on to teach at the University of Washington Law School from 1930-1931. He started the Vivian Carkeek Prize, "for the best student contribution to the Washington Law Review on a point of Washington law or any point of peculiar interest to Washington attorneys," which the UW Law School continues to award, as of 2004.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The Vivian M. Carkeek papers contain materials from his study of law at the University of Washington, and from the courses he taught at the university. Eight of Carkeek's notebooks from his time as a law student, labeled by their subject matter, are found in the collection. Two other notebooks contain information and notes about literature. These notebooks, along with a large manual containing lesson plans related to title law, make up the bulk of the collection. Other miscellaneous items include a copy of an International Workers of the World (IWW) songbook, bylaws of the Selah Moxee Canal Co., and a folder of clippings, book reviews, and other miscellaneous writings by Carkeek.
