Historical NoteReturn to Top

Melvin "Mel" Byers was born in California in 1920 to Henry and Lena Byers. By 1930, the family had moved to Portland, Oregon where Mel's father worked in road construction. Mel served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, and worked as a cement mason after the war. Early in the 1970s, he ran for a spot in the Oregon legislature, but lost.
