Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Genevieve Murray was born in Milan, Illinois, on October 5, 1894. She was educated in Illinois and North Dakota before attending college at the University of Montana from 1926-1929. While a student at the university, Murray was an active member of the debate team and Mortar Board. Murray graduated from the university with a master's degree in 1929. Her master's thesis was entitled The Bitter Root in Science and in History. Other publications include Murray's 1929 manuscript The True Story of Marias Pass.
In 1930, Murray and her husband, Frank, moved to Lexington, Kentucky, where she taught elementary and high school for 13 years. Murray was active in Theta Sigma Phi and the Girl Scouts. She continued to write feature stories for magazines and in 1975 Murray was awarded the Sullivan Medallion of the University of Kentucky.
She died in Lexington on December 17, 1983.

The collection contains original copies of and research pertaining to Murray's master's thesis The Bitter Root in Science and in History and The True Story of Marias Pass. Included in correspondence are letters exchanged between University of Montana History Department Chair Paul C. Phillips and Great Northern Railway president Ralph Budd. Photographs, maps of Montana Territory and research on early northwest history can also be found in this collection.

The actions of the original processors are largely unknown. In 1998, the collection was re-described.

During original processing, the following items were separated from the original collection:

A trophy inscribed "Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award" to "Mrs. Genevieve Allen Murray - University of Kentucky," dates 1975.
During the 1998 reprocessing, a map of Montana Territory and a map outlining Indian Territory in the 1800's were removed from this collection. These items are now stored in the Map Division of the Mansfield Library.

This series contains biographical information, newspaper clippings and some personal memorabilia of Murray.

Series II: General Correspondence , 1929-1982Return to Top
This series primarily consists of correspondence between UM History Chair Paul C. Phillips and Great Northern Railway president Ralph Budd. Included in these letters is a debate concerning the discovery of Marias Pass at the southern boundary of Glacier National Park.

Series III: Writings , 1928-1930Return to Top
This series includes notes, rough drafts, and photocopies of Murray's master's thesis The Bitter Root in Science and in History. Notes and a rough draft of The True Story of Marias Pass are also included. This manuscript contains some original maps of Oregon and the Glacier area that appear to have been drawn by Murray.

This series is a collection of printed materials. Included in the collection are a 1915 Springfield, Mo., yearbook, 1926 University of Montana yearbook, a list of 1925 and 1926 UM graduates and two booklets concerning University of Kentucky workshops.
