Historical NoteReturn to Top

The College Studies Program originally served as an alternative to the general education requirement at the University of Washington and was established in the Autumn quarter of 1988. The program was available to undergraduates in the College of Arts and Sciences and offered various 15-credit sequences of related general education courses. These sequences provided the opportunity for non-majors to investigate disciplines that form an essential part of a college education and how these fields of study relate to other disciplines and the culture at large. Students were allowed to use a College Studies sequence to replace the regular 20-credit distribution requirement, most recently called Areas of Knowledge, in one, two, or all three of the distribution categories. The student was required to complete all other general education requirements, including the basic skills requirements of English composition, additional writing, quantitative and symbolic reasoning, and foreign language. The College Studies Program was dissolved after the Summer quarter of 1997
