Biographical NoteReturn to Top

John Adelbert "Del" Stark was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 17, 1905 to Lew and Signa Stark. In 1912, the family moved to a ranch in Roundup, Montana where Del Stark, his parents, and his brother, Ben, lived and worked until Lew Stark's death in 1939. The family usually maintained between 400 and 600 head of sheep and, in spite of incidental setbacks, managed to keep the business profitable.

Del Stark never married and lived most of his life in central Montana, except for a year-long trip to seek work in California when we was 23 and a stint in the Army from June of 1942 to October of 1945. He spent most of World War II in England, but was in Frankfurt, Germany after D-Day.

Most of Stark's time was spent on the ranch, but he spent the winter months working in coal mines near Roundup between 1935 and 1942. Other winters were spent working in a combination service station-garage and other businesses in and around Roundup.

Del Stark died in 1982.

This collection contains personal diaries, correspondence, financial records, legal documents, writing samples, family records, research files, photographs, and personal memorabilia created or collected by John A. "Del" Stark during his life as a central Montana sheep rancher, World War II soldier, seasonal coal mine worker, and member of the Roundup, Montana community. This collection is particularly significant for the extensive sequence of personal diaries Stark maintained. These diaries, spanning most of the twentieth century, provide a detailed record of daily events and weather patterns in central Montana; Stark's personal observations and social commentaries; working/living conditions among ranchers, soldiers, coal miners, and freelance handymen of the period; as well as both the subtle and dramatic transformations of rural Montana lifestyles.

Processing Note

The collection was originally processed in two parts, LC 46 and LC 104, in 2004, the collections were combined and re-described. In 2016, additional materials were added to the collection as Accession 2017-004 in a single box, an inventory of the materials is available at Archives and Special Collections. Additionally, instances of the usage of the nickname "Dell" in the guide were changed to reflect the correct spelling of "Del."

Series I: Diaries, 1922-1978Return to Top

This series contains diaries maintained by John A. "Del" Stark, starting with his seventeenth birthday and ending when he was 73. These diaries record Stark's observations regarding life on the Stark ranch, Montana livestock industry developments, the social network of central Montana, his infantry experiences during World War II, working conditions in the coal mines of central Montana, and his personal ambitions. Both individually and collectively the materials in this series present insight into Stark's personal life and worldview as well as significant transformations within a rural Montana community during the twentieth century. Stark began writing diaries with the ambition that these records would be valuable research material after he became a famous author. The diaries, as well as some notes in Series V (Writings), document changes in Stark's ambitions to more modest ends, but never relinquish a sense of importance to maintaining the project.

Materials include mortgage payment records for the Stark ranch, insurance policies, promissory notes, and several notepads of Del's personal financial notes. These notepads record equipment/appliance payments, work hours for various freelance projects/seasonal contracts, and financial agreements with friends and neighbors. Materials in this series indirectly record the financial history of the Stark ranch and evidence the extent of informal financial transactions in central Montana's rural economy.

This series contains one folder of legal documents regarding the homesteading of the Stark family ranch, the Stark brothers' partnership to manage (and ultimately sell) the ranch, Del Stark's discharge from the U.S. Army, his employment with local coal mine operations, and involvement with local property disputes. This series contains an extensive sequence of Stark's writing projects. Materials in this series differ from Series I (Diaries) in that, as a young adult, Del began to separately record his creative writing projects and brainstorming sessions from his daily observations. Materials are predominantly bound notebooks containing a mix of poetry, brief story/character descriptions, inspirational quotations, and reflections on the general human condition; however, the series also includes a few handwritten manuscripts. This series reveals the diversity of Stark's writing/philosophical interests and the progression of his approach to writing.

This series contains 657 photographic images taken or collected by John Stark throughout his life. These images document Montana ranch life spanning most of the twentieth century, the landscapes of central and eastern Montana, coal mine operations and work conditions in central Montana, Stark's many friends and co-workers, and his experiences as a soldier during World War II. Most of the image descriptions in this series are transcriptions of notes on the photographs. Descriptions in brackets were added by archival staff to expand and/or clarify identifications.
