Content DescriptionReturn to Top

Tape recorded interview conducted by Meta Kaplan and Francis Posner on 26 Jun 1975 and covering the years 1930-58.

Mrs. Kauffman makes interesting comments about Jewish D.A.R.s in the Philadelphia Section NCJA and about the Bremerton Institute where the idea for the Bonham Galland Nursery was conceived in 1951 with Ellen Heim as a key person. Kauffman gives a densely detailed account of the Bonham Galland nursery, the pilot group, and how parents were helped through the children. She tells how the Golden Age, begun in 1956, was inspired by her previous work in the Kline Galland Home. She tells of the meeting of all Seattle Rabbis there, the resultant Sabbath services, the presentation of the Birnbaum Prayer-books, and also of the evening group's beauty services, etc. She describes the Caravan to Olympia which resulted in the defeat of released time in the schools. She tells of the compilation of "Where to Turn" and "Slightly High", and of training Council volunteers. She also comments on the sale of Neighborhood House.
