Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Zachariah C. Norton was born in Maine in 1808. He became a sailor and then a ship captain. He built the brig Sequin in 1847, and made trips to ports in the Caribbean and South America before sailing for San Francisco, California. Norton carried freight and passengers on several trips between San Francisco and Portland, Oregon (then the Oregon Territory), from 1849 to 1850. He subsequently made a donation land claim in Clackamas County, where he lived until his death in 1879. He and his wife, Caroline Norton, were buried at Lone Fir Cemetery in Portland; their grave marker incorrectly gives his date of birth as 1818.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top
Originals, photostatic reproductions, and photocopies of two manuscript passenger lists for the brig Sequin, commanded by Captain Z. C. Norton. The lists are glued together and written in two different hands. One list is undated but is probably from an 1849 sailing to Portland, Oregon (then the Oregon Territory); at top, it reads: "List of passengers for Brig Sequin / 1st Voyage," and the list indicates that some passengers' fares were to be paid in Portland. The second list, for a trip from San Francisco, California, to Portland, is dated August 28, 1850.
