Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Mareta Pearl Havens was born April 4, 1893. She graduated from Marysville High School in 1910, and earned a B.S. from the University of Washington in 1914. She taught high school science and mathematics in the small towns of Sunnyside and Burlington, Washington. She earned an M.A. in 1932 and was an instructor in science at Santiago College in Santiago, Chile from 1932 to1934. Mareta died on November 30, 1992, at the age of 99.

The Marine Station was established on San Juan Island in 1904, when the University of Washington was in need of a seashore site for teaching biology. In 1910, it moved to four acres of donated waterfront property just south of Friday Harbor to build permanent research buildings, though students still lived outdoors in tents. The tidelands large tidal fluctuations exposed a rich diversity of marine biology and invertebrates. Informal summer sessions grew, and by 1914 the station reached class enrollments of 70 students. In 1923, the station moved to its current site at Point Caution. Over the years, it has been involved with all the marine departments at the University of Washington, and its name changed to the Puget Sound Biological Station, then to the Oceanographic Laboratories, then to its current name of Friday Harbor Laboratories. This 1913 group includes professors and students.

Friday Harbor is on the east coast of San Juan Island, one of the many islands in Washington's San Juan archipelago. Minnesota Reef is located off the easternmost tip of San Juan Island. On the southeast coast is False Bay, and Kanaka is a small bay just north of False Bay. The group traveled to other islands in the San Juan Archipelago: Orcas, where they climbed Mount Constitution; Shaw, Sucias, Skipjack, and Waldron.
