- Oral history interview, photographs and papers. In the interview, Eva Deutsch talks about early memories in Plotsk, Poland hiding from searchers and being smuggled out of Russia, and early memories in Texas. The Alaska Yukon Exposition attracted them to Seattle where she was grateful for the Settlement House, and Mrs. Schwartz who inspired her love of sewing. She speaks about Mrs. Nathan Degginger, Mrs. Brill, and Mrs. Eckstein from the Settlement House, Congregation Herzl Ner Tamid, her husband's business and other topics. Eva is a member of the Esfeld family, the sister of Sol Esfeld

Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Born in approximately 1896, Eva Esfeld was one of three daughters to parents Max and Jenny Esfeld. Her father immigrated from Poland to the United States in approximately 1903 and the family joined him in 1907. In 1909, they traveled to Seattle to take part in the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, and took up residence in the Settlement House. The Esfelds were part of the Herzl Congregation. In 1916, Eva married Julius Deutsch and later gave birth to daughters Dorothea Deutsch Gordon, Helen Deutsch Lott and Elsie Deutsch Weiner, and son Allen. During the 1920s, Eva taught English at the Settlement house and during World War II she managed Western Leather Works. Eva Esfeld Deutsch died in January 1991 and was buried in the Herzl Cemetery.

Processing Note
The bulk of the collection centers around the oral history interview which was accessioned as accession 2498-001. Later accessions (2498-002, 2498-003, 2498-004) contained photographs and clippings. Many of the photographs from the later accessions were relocated to the Visual Materials collection in the repository and processed as PH Collection 808. A few photographs remain in accession 2498-001 along with clippings and transcript in VF882.
