Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Daniel Neuman has written and co-edited four books: The Life of Music in North India: The Organization of an Artistic Tradition, published by Wayne State University Press (1980) and republished by the University of Chicago Press (1990); (as co-editor) Ethnomusicology and Modern Music History, published by the University of Illinois Press (1991), and Bards, Ballads and Boundaries: An Ethnographic Atlas of Musical Cultures in West Rajasthan (co-authored with Shubha Chaudhuri), published by Seagull Press (2007). A new book has just appeared under the title Studying Indian's Musicians: Four Decades of Selected Articles.

Neuman had earlier also been active in multimedia development, receiving several grants for the development of the World Music Navigator, a computerized ethnographic atlas of the early 1990s. Previously Neuman has taught at Dartmouth College and at the University of Washington, where he served for ten years as Director of the School of Music, before serving as Dean of the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture between 1996 and 2002 and as UCLA's Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost from 2002 to 2006.
